Quervain disease
The thumb is moved by muscles in the forearm. The tendons that go to the thumb slide through a tendon sheath at the level of the wrist joint. In this condition there is irritation of the tendon sheath and the tendons that run through it. When using the hand and thumb, this causes pain on the thumb side of the forearm.

The meaning of Quervain Disease
The thumb can be moved by contracting muscles that originate in the forearm (extensor pollicis brevis and abductor pollicis longus). The tendons extend to the thumb and run through a smooth tunnel at the wrist to help reduce any friction when the wrist is at an angle. This tunnel is called the tendon sheath and is filled with some fluid (synovium). De Quervain’s syndrome is an irritation or inflammation of this sheath and the tendons that run through it. The irritated tendon sheath is located on the thumb side (radial side) of the wrist and causes local pain when using the thumb or the hand.
The causes of Quervain Disease
The injury is usually caused by overuse, for example after gardening. It is more common in volleyball and racket sports players. New mums are also more prone due to the increased load while caring for their newborn. It is caused by repetitive movement and is also known as BlackBerry thumb.
The symptoms of Quervain Disease
Pain can be caused by movements of the thumb but is especially noticeable with squeezing or wringing motions. The pain is on the thumb side of the wrist and local swelling can be present.
The treatment of Quervain Disease
Often avoiding any further overuse is enough to let the tendon and sheath recover. A wrist brace can be used to help prevent irritation. If symptoms persist, anti-inflammatory drugs can be helpful. This can either be in the form of oral medication or a steroid injection. This is arranged by your GP or specialist if required.
