The jaw

The jaw joints (temporomandibular joints or TMJ) consist of a socket located in the skull just in front of the ear and rounded head at the tip of the lower jaw bone. A disc lies between the head and the socket. Just like any joint in the body the jaw can get injured and cause pain. This can lead to restricted opening of the mouth, blockages or subluxations, but can also cause pain without any movement restrictions. Normal activities like chewing, biting or yawning can become problematic.

Sometimes the cause of the injury is due to structural changes; for instance poor fitting prosthesis, changes to the teeth or arthritis of the jaw. Habits like excessive chewing or sucking on candy, biting your nails or cheek, grinding your teeth or clenching (bruxism) are also common causes of injury.
