Intersection syndrome

Intersection syndrome is also known as "rower's pulse". About 5 centimeters above the wrist joint towards the elbow, two extensors of the wrist intersect with two extensors of the thumb. The tendons of these muscles lie flat on top of each other. Around each tendon is a smooth sheath that ensures that the tendons slide easily over each other. This sheath (tendon sheath) is probably inflamed at the rower's wrist.

The meaning of a intersection syndrome

Intersection syndrome is also known as wrist tendinitis. Roughly 2 inches above the wrist towards the elbow, two extensor muscles of the wrist and two muscles of the thumb cross each other. The tendons of these muscles lay on top of each other. Each tendon is surrounded by a tendon sheath to allow the tendons to move over each other smoothly. Intersection syndrome is caused by an irritation or inflammation of the tendon sheaths.

The causes of a intersection syndrome

This injury is commonly caused by repetitive bending and straightening of the wrist under load. Wrist tendinitis is a painful inflammation in the forearm due to friction at the point where the tendons cross each other. People that row, lift weight, gymnasts or racket sport players are at increased risk of developing intersection syndrome.

The symptoms of a intersection syndrome

Pain a couple of inches above the wrist on the topside of the forearm is the most common symptom. The pain is aggravated by wrist movement and gripping. Mild swelling may be present on the topside of the forearm.

The treatment of a intersection syndrome

Determining the cause of the overuse and avoiding further overuse is important. Relative rest will resolve the injury in most cases. If symptoms persist, immobilization of the wrist and thumb with a brace or cast may be needed.

Synonyms

Wrist tendinitis, intersection syndrome, pain above the wrist
