Biceps tendon injury (distal biceps injury)

The biceps (biceps brachii) tendon is attached at the front of the shoulder and on the bottom of the radial bone of the forearm. The biceps muscle helps to bend the elbow and lift the arm forwards. A rupture can occur if the tendon is weakened or when you bend the elbow under heavy load. Here you will find exercises and information about a biceps tendon injury.

1. Bicep curl

12x • 3 sets

Pak met beide handen een dumbell vast en ga recht op staan. Zorg dat je stevig staat en houdt je armen licht gestrekt naast de heupen. Houdt de ellebogen stil en beweeg de dumbells vervolgens naar de schouders. Herhaal dit

2. Bicep curl in stand

12x • 3 sets

3. Row in stand TRX

The meaning of a biceps tendon injury (distal biceps tendon injury)

Three bones join together to make up the elbow joint, the upper arm (humerus) and forearm (radius and ulna). To help stabilize the elbow, a joint capsule and ligaments on the inner and outer side provide passive stability. The elbow is able to move smoothly and pain free due to the shape of the bones, guidance from the ligaments and capsule and coordinated movements of the muscles.

The biceps (biceps brachii) tendon is attached at the front of the shoulder and on the bottom of the radial bone of the forearm. The biceps muscle helps to bend the elbow and lift the arm forwards. The attachment on the radial bone is about an inch below the elbow pit on the inner side of the forearm.

The causes of a biceps tendon injury (distal biceps tendon injury)

A rupture can occur if the tendon is weakened or when you bend the elbow under heavy load. This is also known as a distal biceps tendon rupture.

The symptoms of a biceps tendon injury (distal biceps tendon injury)

Injury of the biceps tendon can occur after chronic overuse or as an acute injury while lifting something heavy. The pain is located on the inner side of the forearm just below the elbow. If you felt something snap in the elbow during heavy lifting, contact your GP or physiotherapist immediately to get it diagnosed. There may be damage to the attachment of the tendon on the radial bone (radius). If there is a complete rupture the biceps muscle can be visibly retracted toward the shoulder.

The treatment of a biceps tendon injury (distal biceps tendon injury)

Biceps tendon injuries can be treated with surgical and non-surgical (conservative) treatment. Whether surgery is indicated depends on a number of factors with age being an important factor. During non-surgical (conservative) treatment you will initially wear a sling, followed by mobilization techniques and exercise therapy. During surgery, the biceps tendon is reattached to the bone with bone anchors and sutures (biceps tenodesis).
